Cetraben Information
What is Cetraben Cream?
Cetraben Cream is a very popular emollient used to treat eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and other conditions that cause dry, itchy, flaky and chapped skin. It can be bought over-the-counter or prescribed as a daily moisturising treatment to prevent flare-ups of common skin conditions.
Cetraben Cream is manufactured by Thornton & Ross and is suitable for vegans (it is animal cruelty free). It is fragrance-free and available in three different sizes — 50ml, 200ml, & 475ml pumps.
What is Cetraben Cream used for?
Cetraben Cream should be used regularly to keep the skin healthy and prevent flare-ups for common chronic skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis. Normally, this means applying it to areas where you are prone to getting dry, cracked, flaky or itchy skin at least twice daily.
It can also be used during a flare-up to moisturise and soothe skin that has become irritated or red.
Cetraben Cream can be used by adults and children.
What is Cetraben Ointment?
Cetraben Ointment is an emollient that is used in very dry skin conditions where cream emollients are unable to provide enough moisture to the affected skin. Due to its greasy properties, many people use Cetraben Ointment overnight to lock moisture in and allow the skin to repair whilst you are sleeping.
Cetraben Ointment is manufactured by Thornton & Ross and is suitable for vegans (it is animal cruelty free). It is fragrance-free and available in 450ml tubs.
How Cetraben Cream & Cetraben Ointment help eczema-prone skin
Cetraben Cream and Ointment can help soothe itchy, dry and sensitive skin. They do this by trapping moisture in the skin and forming a protective barrier to repel irritants. This makes them highly effective for treating eczema.

How to apply Cetraben Cream & Cetraben Ointment
- Apply Cetraben Cream as often as required to hydrate skin throughout the day, ensuring the area is well covered. This is normally two to four times daily, depending on use of other emollient products.
- Cetraben Ointment can be applied as many times as needed but is normally used once daily at night.
- Apply gently in the direction of hair growth.
- Avoid vigorously rubbing the cream in, as this could make your skin hotter and aggravate the condition.
- Apply your moisturiser before and after you bathe or shower to protect against dry skin.
How to prime your Cetraben Cream pump:
- Remove the tamper evident clip
- Place a fingertip over the nozzle
- Fully depress the pump several times to expel any air
- Check cream is being dispensed - if not then repeat steps 2-4

Cetraben warnings
Cetraben can be flammable
Cetraben contains liquid paraffin, which is highly flammable. You should keep away from open or gas fires or hobs and naked flames, including candles etc. and not to smoke when using Cetraben.
Bedding and clothing should be washed regularly (preferably daily) to minimise the build-up of impregnated paraffin although it may not be completely removed, unless it is washed at a high temperature, as paraffin is invisible and can accumulate over time.
Allergies and reactions
Do not use Cetraben if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Mild skin reactions, such as redness and rash, have been seen very rarely — should this occur, use of the product should be stopped. In the unlikely event of side-effects, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
It must also be noted that Cetraben contains cetostearyl alcohol. This is a mixture of fatty alcohols that may cause local skin reactions such as contact dermatitis.
As with any medicines, you should carefully read all product packaging and labels prior to use.
Cetraben should be applied to external skin only.
Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before treating damaged skin
You can apply Cetraben to any part of your body, meaning it can be used to treat facial eczema and other variations of the condition (though it’s vital to avoid touching your eyes).
If you want to treat skin that’s infected, bleeding, or badly cracked, though, you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist first. Applying Cetraben to these areas could be problematic.
You should also talk to a doctor or pharmacist if your use of the ointment or cream appears to be causing significant negative skin reactions (such as itching, stinging or redness).
