Fusidic Acid Information

What is Fusidic Acid Cream?

Fusidic acid cream is a topical medication used to treat bacterial skin infections. It contains the active ingredient fusidic acid, which is an antibiotic. Fusidic acid is effective against a range of bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA).

What does Fusidic Acid Cream do?

Fusidic acid works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which prevents the bacteria from growing and multiplying. It is important to apply the cream to the affected area of the skin as directed by a healthcare provider and to complete the full course of treatment, even if the symptoms improve before the medication is finished.

Fusidic Acid Cream alternatives

There are several other topical antibiotic options and treatments that may be considered based on the type and severity of the infection. Keep in mind that the choice of treatment should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider, as they can assess your specific condition and recommend the most suitable approach. Here are some alternatives to fusidic acid cream:

  • Mupirocin: Mupirocin is another topical antibiotic commonly used to treat skin infections, including impetigo. It is effective against a range of bacteria, including MRSA.
  • For minor skin infections, over-the-counter antiseptics like hydrogen peroxide or povidone-iodine can help clean and disinfect the affected area.
  • Neomycin is an antibiotic found in some over-the-counter creams and ointments, although it is less commonly prescribed due to the risk of sensitization and allergies.

What can Fusidic Acid Cream treat?

Fusidic acid cream is commonly used to treat the following skin conditions:

  • Impetigo: Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection characterised by red sores or blisters that can break and form a yellow crust. Fusidic acid cream is often prescribed to treat localized impetigo.
  • Infected Dermatitis: Fusidic acid cream can be used to treat infected dermatitis, which is a skin inflammation that becomes infected with bacteria.
  • Other Skin Infections: In addition to the above, fusidic acid cream may be used to treat various other skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

How to use Fusidic Acid Cream

Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider, and if you have any doubts or concerns, don't hesitate to seek clarification. Here are general guidelines for using Fusidic Acid Cream:

  1. Wash Your Hands: Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water to prevent the spread of infection.
  2. Clean the Affected Area: Gently clean the infected area of the skin with mild soap and water. Pat the area dry with a clean, sterile towel. Be sure to remove any discharge or crusts.
  3. Apply a Thin Layer: Squeeze a small amount of fusidic acid cream onto your fingertip or a clean cotton swab. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area. Avoid excessive rubbing or massaging the cream into the skin.
  4. Cover the Area (if needed): In some cases, your healthcare provider may recommend covering the treated area with a sterile dressing or bandage. Follow their instructions regarding the use of dressings.
  5. Wash Your Hands Again: After applying the cream and, if necessary, dressing, wash your hands again to avoid contaminating other surfaces or objects.
  6. Frequency and Duration: Fusidic acid cream is typically applied 2 to 3 times a day, or as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Follow the recommended schedule and apply the cream consistently until the full course of treatment is completed, even if your symptoms improve before that time.
  7. Avoid Eyes, Mouth, and Mucous Membranes: Be very careful not to get the cream in your eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  8. Discontinue Use if Allergic Reaction Occurs: If you experience an allergic reaction (such as rash, itching, or swelling), discontinue use and seek immediate medical attention.
  9. Follow Medical Advice: It's important to follow any additional advice or recommendations provided by your healthcare provider regarding the use of fusidic acid cream.
  10. Prevent Cross-Contamination: Avoid sharing towels, washcloths, or other personal items to prevent the spread of the infection to others.

Remember that the effectiveness of fusidic acid cream depends on consistent and proper application, as well as completing the full course of treatment. If you have any questions or concerns about using the cream or the progress of your treatment, consult with your healthcare provider for guidance and adjustments as needed.

Fusidic acid side effects

Not everyone will experience side effects when they use fusidic acid — it is an extremely safe and effective medication, and side effects are unusual. Most people will have a very positive experience with no noticeable side effects during their course of treatment

However, it’s a good idea to be informed about the possible side effects of any medication you decide to use, including fusidic acid.

The more common fusidic acid side effects are:

  • Irritation at site of application, including pain, burning, irritation, stinging and skin redness
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Eczema

Though these are the most common - they are still only experienced by one in 100 people.

It's important to note that serious side effects with fusidic acid are rare, and most people tolerate it well. However, if you experience any unexpected or severe reactions, you should consult your healthcare provider.

Fusidic Acid Cream warnings

Fusidic Acid Cream, which contains the antibiotic fusidic acid, is generally safe and well-tolerated when used as prescribed. However, there are some important warnings and precautions to consider when using Fucidin cream:

Allergies: If you are allergic to fusidic acid or any other ingredients in Fusidic Acid Cream, you should not use this medication. Allergic reactions can range from mild skin irritation to more severe symptoms like rash, itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing. If you suspect an allergic reaction, discontinue use and seek immediate medical attention.

Avoid Contact with Eyes, Mouth, and Mucous Membranes: Fusidic Acid Cream is for external use only. Avoid getting the cream in your eyes, mouth, or on mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.

Incomplete Treatment: Finish the full course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve before the medication is finished. Stopping treatment prematurely can lead to incomplete resolution of the infection and potential antibiotic resistance.

Bacterial Resistance: Overuse and misuse of antibiotics can contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Use Fusidic Acid Cream only for the specific infection it is prescribed to treat and avoid using it for unrelated issues.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, consult with your healthcare provider before using Fusidic Acid Cream. They can weigh the potential risks and benefits and determine if it is safe for your situation.

Interactions: Fusidic Acid Cream is primarily used topically, so interactions with other medications are rare. However, it's a good practice to inform your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter products you are using to prevent any potential interactions.
